What is tremendous?

What Does tremendous Mean

Tremendo , originating from the Latin tremendus , is an adjective that is used to qualify different questions. The first meaning of the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ) refers to what is terrifying, frightening or creepy .

For example: "A tremendous accident on the San Juan bridge caused the death of five people" , "Tremendous explosion in a chemical factory: two workers died and five were seriously injured" , "The truth is that I am going through a tremendous moment that I do not wish it to anybody ” .
In the etymology of the term tremendous hides a meaning that we do not usually notice: to tremble . The Latin root mentioned in the first paragraph, tremendus , is nothing other than the gerundive (an impersonal verb form) of the Latin verb which in our language is "tremble", although it also derived in other words related to fear. Therefore, when speaking of "something tremendous" we should think of a situation worthy of causing tremors.

This meaning of the concept, as can be appreciated, implies a negative charge. Tremendous, however, can also be used to highlight valuable issues . Something tremendous, in this sense, can provoke admiration : “The Swedish striker scored a tremendous goal in last night's game” , “Tremendous achievement of national cinema! More than three million viewers saw Gómez's new film ” , “ The young man made a tremendous effort to get to this place and he deserves respect ” .
What causes astonishment can be described as tremendous: “This news is tremendous: I don't know how the boss will react” , “The singer's tremendous revelation: he said that he lived on the street all his adolescence” , “The resignation of the president was something tremendous ” .
Returning to the etymological origin of tremendous, it is important to note that tremors do not always arise in a negative or terrifying situation , but can also be a response to a very intense emotion . Therefore, it is easy to imagine that an exceptional move by a great footballer and the story of a sad adolescence immersed in poverty causes tremors to the interlocutor, although the reasons are different in each case.
Spinning finer, when we say that something is scary it can also be something that we like a lot and that causes us admiration: "This singer has a scary vocal extension" , "The photorealism that this console can achieve is scary" .
In the field of pink journalism (also called journalism of the heart and pink chronicle , it is the one that focuses on the life of the show business, that is, of famous people), the word tremendous is often used with the aim of exaggerating the importance of one story , and often appears in headlines that are more interesting than the article itself. One can speak of "tremendous bum", "tremendous insult" or "tremendous humiliation", for example, to attract the reader with the promise of delighting him with embarrassing anecdotes of famous people he least esteems, be they artists, businessmen, athletes or politicians .

When the notion is applied to a person , usually a child, it refers to their being naughty or not very attached to the rules : "Pedrito is tremendous, I don't know what to do to make him behave well" , "Tonight? will you go out again? You are tremendous, you never rest " , " When I was a child it was tremendous, but over the years I became more obedient .
This term is also the stage name of a Spanish rapper named Enrique López Guerrero, originally from Tarrasa, Barcelona. His interest in this music, which for many reaches its maximum potential in English, since it arose in that language and does not adapt correctly to the harshness of Spanish, began in the 90s; Then he used to attend concert halls of this genre, and soon he met dj Griffi and Juan Solo, two very significant people in his career. In 2000 he released his first album, entitled Avoid , and it didn't take long to get good reviews and national fame.
