What is something?

What Does something Mean

In order to know the meaning of the term something, the first thing we are going to do is discover its etymological origin. In this case, it must be emphasized that it is a word that derives from Latin, more precisely from “aliquod”, which is the neutral accusative of the pronoun “aliquis, aliqua”.

It is an indefinite pronoun : a type of word that lacks grammatical definiteness and that refers to the correspondence with a certain class.
Something is used to refer to what is not in a position to name or does not want to do so. For example: “I'm going to eat something before I go back to work” , “Excuse me, but there is something that strikes me in your story” , “I feel like I have to do something to help my father” .

If we analyze the first example , the person speaking announces that he will eat "something" but does not define what. This is possibly because you have not yet chosen what your meal will be. Something similar occurs in the third example: it is probable that the subject wants to collaborate with his father but cannot determine how he will do it. In the second example, the speaker warns his interlocutor that "something" is strange to him, without wanting to detail what it is that generates doubts.
The pronoun can also refer to a certain amount that is not specified. Usually it is a small amount or a percentage of a total: “The boss gave me some money, but he still did not complete the payment that we had agreed to” , “I am going to give you something to help you cover the expenses of the operation ” , “ I still can't see the river: there is something left to get there ” .
Finally, something is linked to what is a bit or is done up to a certain level: “I'm a bit tired, but I'm still going to the party” , “I speak Italian and German perfectly and also Sunday some English ” .
In the field of culture, in many cases we come across the constant use of the term that occupies us in the titles of films, books, songs ... This would be the case, for example, of the famous composition of the Spanish singer Camilo Sesto “Algo from my". It is a single that he published in 1971 and which also gives title to the album in which it is included.
It is considered one of the best known songs by that artist along with others such as "Living is like this is dying of love", "For love" or "Forgive me."
Within the field of cinematography we find different productions that use in their titles the pronoun that concerns us:

- "Something happens with Mary". It is a 1998 comedy directed by the Farrelly brothers and starring Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz. It tells the love story, throughout the decades, of its two protagonists.

- "Something happens in Las Vegas." From 2008 is, for its part, this comedy that tells how a man and a woman, living complicated personal moments, meet drunk in the city of Las Vegas and end up getting married. However, when they wake up and realize what happened they will try to change things, but perhaps it is too late.
