What Does propulsion Mean

Propulsion is the process and result of propelling . A verb this that has its etymological origin in Latin, in "propulsare". This term means “to forcefully push something to move it forward” and is the result of the sum of the following elements:

-The prefix “pro-”, which can be translated as “forward”.

-The verb "pulse", which is synonymous with "beat".

Propulsar, therefore, verb refers to the impulse that is given to something to advance or move, either in a physical or symbolic sense. Propulsion, therefore, is a displacement that occurs through the action of a force .
Human propulsion is known as that which is generated by the force of a person's muscles . This type of traction is present in canoes, skateboards, bicycles, and many other vehicles. Human propulsion is not only economical, it is also healthy since physical activity brings benefits to the body.

Specifically, among those other types of vehicles that work by means of what has been called human propulsion, we find boats that go rowing, the case of pirogues, or in-line skates.
In one of the sports where propulsion is most important is swimming. And it is that the person in question needs to carry it out to be able to move in the water thus overcoming the resistance that it presents. In order to achieve this displacement, it is essential that the swimmer perform certain movements with both their lower and upper extremities.
More specifically, we can point out that in the field of swimming, it is considered that there are different types of propulsion:

-Taking into account the kind of movement, there are scissors, pedaling, kick ... Moreover, this classification can be subdivided if part of the number of members that are used to perform that, which would lead to propulsion of one or two arms and one or two legs.

-Based on the actions carried out with the arms, they can be simultaneous, alternative, long, short, aerial…

-If what is taken into consideration is the position of the body, it can be determined that the propulsion can be lateral, ventral, dorsal or vertical.
The jet , meanwhile, is performed by a jet engine. This class of engines works with the discharge of fluids at high speed: these jets cause the thrust that allows a vehicle to be mobilized. Jet- type airplanes , for example, run on jet propulsion.
Another class of propulsion is nuclear propulsion . As its name indicates, in this case the propulsion is caused by a nuclear reaction , which takes place in a chain and in a controlled manner by means of devices known as reactors . There are ships and submarines that move thanks to nuclear propulsion.

When the propulsion is developed by means that, at least at present, are not conventional or their use is not massive, we speak of alternative propulsion . Vehicles that run on solar energy or hydrogen are examples of this propulsion.
