What Does overrated Mean
The term overvalued comes from the verb overvalue : to attribute to something or someone a higher value than it actually has . The overrated, therefore, is overrated .
Some examples of "overrated"
For example: "In my opinion this artist is overrated, I think his songs are very repetitive and lack originality" , "The dialogue is overrated since with certain people there is nothing to talk about" , "There are several overrated footballers whose skills are exaggerated by their representatives, in complicity with journalism, to improve their contracts ” .
To overvalue is to distort towards perfection
The first example tells us about a musician who apparently enjoys a lot of popularity, although the broadcaster does not understand the reason because he considers that he does not offer sufficiently varied songs. The second has a less direct approach: it points out that with some people it is not worth engaging in dialogue, because they cannot communicate with the necessary height for an intellectual exchange to take place .
The last of the examples is related to the first, since it has as an overrated figure the famous footballers. According to the interlocutor, many of them sell themselves to the public as athletes of a much higher level than they actually have, and this distortion is not accidental but intentionally caused by their representatives and journalists.
The subjectivity of the concept
It is important to mention that many times the evaluation is subjective. In fact, in most cases it is, since even in the fields of "exact" appearance we must remember that all the concepts that we handle have been created by beings of our species, and that therefore they can be rethought in any moment.
Like it or not, we all carry subjectivity: from language to physics, our species builds pillars of knowledge based on observation , and there is no objective way of observing. We can rely on certain more rigid concepts, which we believe to be invariable over time, but history has shown us more than once that we are often wrong. In other words, our so-called "higher intelligence" is overrated.
Let's look at one more example in which the subjectivity of this term can be appreciated . Suppose a writer receives many awards for his work and manages to sell thousands of copies of his books. For a literary critic, however, the author is overrated : he considers that he does not really have great merits, but that his popularity is based on marketing and advertising investments .
The inevitable disappointment
Whether we think of our marching band or our favorite actors, if we tend to attribute exaggerated qualities to them there will surely come a point where we are disappointed because we discover that they are not as brilliant as we thought.
This does not mean that it is wrong to admire someone, focus on their strengths, and divulge them. Rather, we should remember that flaws are an inherent part of our being , and that we should not hide or be ashamed of them. Our favorite actress can also give a regular performance, and she is still incredibly talented.
An overpriced product is paid above its price
In the market
The notion of overvalued is also used with respect to a product that was priced and / or paid for more expensive than it corresponds . The concept, used in this way, usually appears within the framework of a purchase made by the State .
Take the case of the authorities of a country that allocated 100,000 pesos to the purchase of 20,000 liters of alcohol for disinfection tasks. As you can see, they paid 5 pesos per liter . If the market price of alcohol is 3 pesos per liter , it can be said that it was an overvalued purchase . Therefore, it is probable that behind the operation and that difference in values an act of corruption is hidden.
