What Does myriapods Mean

The millipedes are arthropod animals having the body divided into rings with one or two pairs of legs each . Also known as myriopods , these species have two antennae, are terrestrial, and breathe through a tracheal system.

It is interesting to note that myriopod comes from the Greek word myriopous , which can be translated as "innumerable feet . " Having at least two legs per ring , myriapods always show a large number of limbs.

Physical characteristics
Like all arthropods, myriapods are invertebrates and their body is made up of several segments. These animals are protected by a cuticle with a certain impermeability and different levels of calcification and sclerotization.
On the head, myriapods have antennae with sensory organs . The mouth , meanwhile, has jaws and two pairs of maxillae.
Reproduction and behavior
Regarding their reproduction , insemination is sometimes indirect. In this way, the males leave the spermatophores near the female, who is responsible for collecting them and depositing them in her body. It should be noted that myriapods are oviparous .
Regarding behavior, it can be indicated that myriapods tend to move in search of moisture and to get away from light. Their habits are generally nocturnal, with which they spend the day in hiding.

The most important aspect to keep in mind is that they can be poisonous .
This poison is used during the capture of their prey, for which they use their prominent mouthparts . Since they lose a lot of liquid, they need humid microclimates to survive; however, in the hundreds of millions of years they have been on Earth they have colonized very different environments.

The myriapod greater number of legs is a scientific name millipede llacme plenipes . Specimens with 375 pairs have been found: that is, with 750 legs. The species with the fewest reaches 34 legs. This tells us that in no case do they reach a thousand.
They belong to the class of diplopods ( Diplopoda ). The body of the millipede is usually cylindrical and elongated, although that of the oniscomorphs is less extensive and can curl into a ball. The variety is considerable: around twelve thousand species have been recorded, which are divided into sixteen orders and about one hundred and forty families.
Almost all species of these myriapods are detritivores , that is, they get their food from organic matter that is in a state of decomposition. They usually eat plant matter, such as leaves, although some include certain mushrooms in their diet; those who hunt for food are rare.
Their movement is slow and they generally do not pose a threat to our species. However, there are species that can plague homes and gardens , especially greenhouses, with consequent damage to plants.
