What is Mediterranean?

What Does Mediterranean Mean

The etymological origin of the term Mediterranean is found in Latin. Exactly it emanates from “mediterraneus”, which is the result of the sum of two lexical components of that mentioned language:

-The adjective “medius”, which can be translated as “central” or “intermediate”.

-The noun “terra”, which is synonymous with “land”.

It can be translated as that which is found in the middle of the earth . The concept is often used with reference to a sea in the Atlantic Ocean and the regions bathed by that sea.
The Mediterranean Sea runs between Europe , Asia and Africa . It covers an area of about 2.5 million square kilometers, making it the largest inland sea on the planet behind the Caribbean .

Located in subtropical and temperate regions, millions of people reside on its coasts. The population even increases in the summer season thanks to tourism that takes advantage of the sea to cool off.
Spain , Italy , France , Croatia , Israel , Lebanon , Egypt and Tunisia are some of the nations with beaches in the Mediterranean . It should be noted that this sea is divided into other minor ones such as the Aegean , the Ionian , the Adriatic , the Tyrrhenian and the Ligurian Sea .
Mallorca , Crete , Cyprus , Corsica , Sardinia and Sicily , meanwhile, are among the main islands in the Mediterranean . As for cities near this sea and its basin, we can mention Barcelona , Marseille , Rome , Athens , Beirut and Tripoli , for example. It should be noted that in Mediterranean countries the so-called Mediterranean diet is usually followed , based on the consumption of olive oil, cereals and vegetables.
You should also know about this sea that during classical Roman times it was known as “Mare Nostrum” (Our Sea) and that it has another series of peculiarities such as these:

-In total it bathes 20 countries.

-The Mediterranean has become one of the places with the greatest tourist attraction. Hence, it is considered that annually it receives the visit of about 100 million travelers. They seek to enjoy its climate, its gastronomy, its monuments, its beaches ...

-It has an average depth of 1,340 meters. However, the area that has the greatest depth is the Matapán Trench, located in Greece and which reaches 5,267 meters.

-In its waters it is considered that there are more than 17,000 different marine species. Likewise, it must be emphasized that it is the area with the highest number of invasive species. Specifically, it is estimated that there are just over 600.

The Mediterranean climate , on the other hand, is one that is characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. In the summer season, therefore, it does not usually rain, unlike what happens in winter. In general, the temperature does not drop below 20 ºC, although there are exceptions.
Finally, “Mediterráneo” is the title of an album by Catalan Joan Manuel Serrat . It includes songs such as “Those little things” , “What is going to be from you” , “Tío Alberto” and the one that gives the album its name.
The song of 'Mediterráneo' was published in 1971, it is considered one of the best in Spanish music and Serrat wrote it during the time he lived in exile in Mexico as it inspired him longing for his land and that sea.
