What is land?

What Does land Mean

From the Latin terrenus , the term land refers to that which belongs to or is related to the land , whether in terms of property or space to farm. It can be said for example: "My father has a field of fourteen hectares in Patagonia" , "In that field we are going to plant corn . "

According to the different specialties, the term can be understood from particular perspectives. For example, in geology , it represents a set of mineral substances that have a common origin or that have been formed at the same time; in sports , the terrain is the limited and conditioned space for sports practice. In these cases, the word can be used as a synonym for court or playing field.

On the other hand, the type of vehicle that can travel surfaces that are not roads is known as off- road , so they are prohibited to common vehicles. An SUV is able to circulate through natural or artificial means such as sand, mud, gravel, ice or snow.
Off-road vehicles attract people and competitions are organized on difficult roads in all parts of the world.
In a symbolic sense, the field is the sphere of action that shows the qualities of people or things, or the order of subjects in question: "I am a specialist in literature: the field of books is my favorite" , " The discussion led to another terrain and it no longer made sense to continue ” .
Speaking in geological terms
Returning to the concept from the geological point of view, we can add that there is a term known as geotechnical characteristics of the terrain and that refers to the morphology of a certain soil; According to the data detailed there, the qualities of a place can be known for sure, what types of species it can host and how many years have passed since its formation. In order to collect these data, a series of studies are carried out, such as surveys, tastings and wells .
This type of knowledge is essential for builders because, in this way, they ensure that buildings are laid on safe ground (which is known not to be the focus of seismic movements or other agents that could endanger their integrity); In addition, according to the type of soil on which it is built, it will be necessary to take one or other precautions .
With regard to the color of a terrain , we must point out that it responds to the components with which the soil is formed; For this reason, many specialists can know according to how a soil looks if it is fertile or not and if it will be used for this or that activity, because they can discern the elements that form it through the tonalities of the surface. It should be noted that the intensity of the color is due to the level of humidity it has.

According to the color it is known that, if the ground is formed by iron and magnesium oxides because it is red in color, by hydrated iron oxides; white and gray indicate the presence of quartz, gypsum and kaolin; and black and brown indicate if it is yellow in color and by organic matter remains if it is black, the blacker the soil, the higher its productivity .
Other particular aspects of the soil can serve to better understand its aeration and humidification capacity . For example, those soils that present mottled or grayish spots do not have good aeration conditions; those that have a too dark color with marked horizontal lines, will be more likely to absorb radiation and therefore, will have higher temperatures than those areas with light colors.
