From the Latin generalis , general is something common to many objects of a different nature or to all individuals that are part of a whole . The adjective allows to name what is common, usual or frequent . For example: "The orange coat is a general characteristic of this breed" , "The Italian people are very boisterous in general" , "Violence is a general feature of all their productions" .

The general, therefore, differs from the specific and the infrequent. To say that a dog has four legs and barks is to speak of general characteristics , common to the entire species. Instead, pointing out that a dog has two black paws and two white paws along with a heart-shaped spot on its back is a specific reference to a particular dog.

Some things can be general in a historical moment and stop being so with the passage of time (such as the use of a hat, much more frequent in the past than today).
