What is fetish?

What Does fetish Mean

According to the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ), a fetish is an element of worship to which certain mystical or magical qualities are attributed. In ancient peoples, fetishes were material idols.
A fetish can be said to be an object that is considered to carry supernatural power . In this way, the one who carries the fetish is protected or has some extraordinary faculty.
The veneration of a fetish is called fetishism . There are thinkers who argue that fetishism supposes a primitive state of religions : from devotion to an object, over time, it passed to abstract thinking.
An example of a fetish is amulets . Beyond religions, many people continue to trust in the "power" of certain things that they decide to always carry with them or to treasure at home. A four-leaf clover , a gem or a horseshoe , for example, can be fetishes: he who has a clover, to name a case, believes that luck favors him. Another person may trust a gem to keep bad energies out of their home.
For Sigmund Freud , a fetish is a body part or an item becomes the object of an individual's sexual desire . Fetishism, in this sense, is a sexual deviation (a paraphilia ).
The term paraphilia is defined as a pattern of sexual behavior that focuses pleasure on unusual sources, including different objects, activities, situations, or even individuals. Since the mind is so broad and each person develops differently, there is no consensus regarding the boundary between normal sexuality and paraphilia; so much so that some experts question the supposed seriousness of this picture.
The foot fetish , which has to this part of the body as a fetish, is one of the best known: the subject is sexually aroused by watching or touching the feet. Even footwear (boots, shoes, etc.) can become a fetish.
If we study the etymology of the word fetishism, we find Latin and Portuguese roots, which refer to "the artificial" and "magic", respectively. Precisely, it is about sexual arousal and even orgasm through a fetish, an object or a part of the body other than the genitals or other areas generally associated with intimate relationships .
It is important to note that having a sexual fetish is not considered a serious or dangerous practice, unless it creates a significant discomfort from a clinical point of view, both to the individual and to those around him. If the latter occurs, then fetishism becomes part of the pathological disorders and requires treatment .
Since sexuality is framed within the fuzzy limits of taboo, people often do not have enough information about these topics, beyond what they research in their privacy or what they talk about with their closest friends. This gives rise to a myriad of misconceptions, such as that sex toys and vibrators are fetishes: precisely, since these products are manufactured with the specific objective of causing sexual pleasure, they are not atypical, and therefore do not fall into this category.
According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders , fetishism is a disease only in those cases in which the person suffering from it cannot lead a normal social or work life; In addition, you must go through this disorder for a minimum period of six months. If you don't meet these requirements, then your fetish is nothing more than a characteristic of your sexuality.
