What is fence?

What Does fence Mean

In order to determine the meaning of the word in question, the first thing we have to do is know its etymological origin. In this case we can say that it derives from Latin, in particular it comes from the term “vallum”, which can be translated as “palisade”.

We also have to highlight that, at first, it was used as a military term, since in the second century the Romans proceeded to build two fences to protect themselves and gain security. We are referring to what became known as Antonini Vallum (Wall of Antoninus) and Vallum Hadriani (Wall of Hadrian).
A fence is a fence that is armed with different stakes or obstacles to protect or close a certain space .
For example: "The Police installed a fence so that the public cannot approach the stage" , "We are going to have to put a fence in the garden so that stray dogs and cats do not enter" , "The young man wanted to jump the fence to escape, but was caught . "

In general, a fence seeks to prevent an intruder from entering a place . The owner of a home with a garden can install a fence to prevent people from entering his property. A peasant, for his part, can put up fences to delimit his land.
There are different types of fences. The most popular are those made with wooden boards : the vertical boards are driven into the ground and placed at a certain distance from each other, staying together through horizontal boards. There are also metal and plastic fences.
In addition to those mentioned, we have to mention other types of fences that are also relevant. Specifically, we are referring to these three:

-Electrified fence. As its name suggests, it is a structure or fence that works based on the principle of electric discharges. It is used as a protection and security measure, since whoever touches or grazes it will suffer a shock. This kind of fence can be found in plots to prevent intruders or animals from escaping.

-Fence for pets. It is a unique device that comes in the form of a collar and is placed on the cat or dog in question. Its objective is none other than that it does not move away from the space where it is indicated, since if it exceeds these limits, it will receive a slight shock.

-Fence for children. Under this name is a safety device that is placed on balconies, terraces and stairs, for example, to prevent children from falling.
In the field of sport , hurdles are the obstacles that athletes must jump in certain competitions, such as hurdles races ( 100-meter hurdles , 400-meter hurdles , etc.) and equestrian jumping (where the horse, guided by a rider , has to jump hurdles).
The billboards , finally, are signs that are installed in public spaces to promote different products : "The Spanish company will pay one million euros a year for your logo appears on billboards in the stadium" .
