What is embankment?

What Does embankment Mean

The term embankment we have to begin by stating that it derives from French, specifically from the sum of two words "terre" (land) and "plein" (full). However, it should not be overlooked either that precisely that Gallic voice had been taken from a 16th century Italian verb: “terrapienare”, which can be translated as “fill with earth”.

This expression became, in our language , an embankment : the land that is used to build a road or a defensive structure , or that is used with the aim of filling in some space . The notion is also used in reference to an unevenness .
For example: "The neighbors demanded that the authorities increase the police presence on the railway embankment since, in recent weeks, it was the scene of numerous robberies" , "Next month we will begin to lift the highway embankment that will connect the San Mateo neighborhood with the city center ” , “ I ask the community to understand that the embankment is not a garbage dump ” .

The usual thing is that the embankment is developed to raise the level of a land and thus have a support plane that allows the impulse of a construction. In general, an embankment is made up of the foundations (the lower sector, which is located next to the surface where it rests), the shoulder (the lateral or external sectors), the core (the fill itself) and the crown ( the upper sector). The creation of the embankment requires the use of different machinery.
In order to carry out the construction of an embankment, it is necessary to have one or more people who are in charge of managing and controlling fundamental aspects in this process, such as the following:

-The materials that are going to be used in the aforementioned construction are It is essential that they do not have roots or any other type of organic element.

-When carrying out this process, it is essential that it is previously checked and clearly certified that the surface offers the necessary stability. But not only that, it also has to be free of all weeds or elements that impede the correct process at hand.

-Following the guidelines given by experts in the field, in the area where you are going to work you also have to perform scarification and drainage tasks.

-It is essential to know the nature of the land where the embankment will be built in order to build it knowing what problems, difficulties or setbacks may exist.

-To give shape to this element, it will be done through layers. In this sense, before placing a new layer of material it is necessary to certify that the previous one is absolutely stable and uniform.
In the field of archeology , one of the types of earthworks carried out by ancient peoples is called an embankment . The notion of earthworks, for its part, refers to the modification of the earth's surface for some purpose.
