What is crag?

What Does crag Mean

Before proceeding to determine the meaning of the term cliff, it is essential to know its etymological origin. In this case, we can establish that it derives from the verb riscar, which, in turn, comes from the Latin verb “resecare”, which can be translated as “cut” and is the result of the addition of the prefix “re-” (reiteration) and "secare" (cut).

The notion of crag is often used with reference to a crag or summit of great height and difficult access. The cliff is a crag that, due to its characteristics, is dangerous for those who wish to reach or travel it.
For example: “The climber stayed a few seconds on the cliff and then began to descend” , “Tragedy on the mountain: a car fell off the ravine while trying to reach a cliff” , “You can still see the flag that we nailed on the cliff” .

The dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ) also recognizes other meanings of cliff, although they are not very common. The RAE indicates that a cliff can be a crack or an incision; a rest of bread; a frying made with dough coated in honey; or even a risk .
Risco is also the name of a town that is located in the Spanish province of Badajoz . According to the demographic data for 2013 , less than two hundred people reside in this municipality of the Autonomous Community of Extremadura .
It is framed within the region of La Siberia, is located 497 meters above sea level and has, among its most important monuments, the Hermitage of San Isidro, the Parish of San Blas, dating from the 18th century, and the Hermitage of Our Lady of Good Happiness.
The Monastery of Nuestra Señora del Risco , on the other hand, is a 16th century convent that is located in the Sierra de Ávila and is currently in ruins. This monastery is located in the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León ( Spain ).
In the same way, we must not forget that in the Canary archipelago, specifically on the island of Gran Canaria, there is what is known as Risco Caído. It is a ceremonial center or almogarén that is considered a very rich and interesting archaeological complex of a religious and astronomical nature referring to the ancient inhabitants of that land.
It has an undeniable historical, biological and artistic value and is located in the surroundings of the Caldera de Tejeda. And it is that to the existing cave caves we must add terraces or spectacular geological scenes. All this without forgetting that it has an Observatory and that the female sexual representations that can be found are very interesting and that, it seems, come to indicate the existence of a fertility cult at that time.
Risco , finally, is the name of several companies: RISCO Group (with offices in Australia , United Kingdom , Spain , Italy , United States , Poland , Argentina , Chile , Israel and other countries), Risco Viajes (Argentine travel agency) and Risco SpA (machinery for the food industry ), among others.
