What is an armpit rash?

An armpit rash is a raised or flat rash, often red, that occurs in the armpit. The rash in the armpits can be itchy and painful. There are many causes of an armpit rash. Most commonly, the cause is allergic in nature. Often a new deodorant or soap can be the culprit. Often new laundry detergents or never worn clothes can also be the source of the rash. In addition to the allergic reaction, the armpit rash can be related to medical conditions, such as fungal infections or psoriasis. In many cases, armpit rashes resolve on their own without any treatment.

In general, armpits provide a perfect breeding ground for fungal growth. For this reason, yeast infections are a common source of armpit rashes. Typically, fungal infections that occur under the arms feature redness and severe itching. Sometimes inflammation and a burning sensation are also present. Treatment for yeast infections in the armpits usually includes antifungal creams or ointments. Topical antifungals are usually effective, but a doctor may also recommend oral antifungal medications.

A skin condition called psoriasis can often cause an underarm rash. Typically, psoriasis refers to a condition where the skin becomes inflamed and scaly. The skin patches may even have a silvery appearance. In addition to psoriatic patches and skin rashes that occur under the arm, they can also appear in the folds of the arm. In general, topical hydrocortisone ointments are effective in treating the underarm rash and inflammation of psoriasis.

Underarm shaving can also cause a rash because the hair follicles can become infected. Typically, shaving your armpit area can cause irritation and friction, which can also lead to infected hair follicles. This common medical condition is known as folliculitis. Most of the time, when shaving is stopped for a week or so, the rash and bumps can resolve. A hypoallergenic shaving cream can also prevent folliculitis. If this condition persists, people are urged to see their doctors. Antibiotics may also be recommended.

Systemic medical conditions can also be the cause of an armpit rash. Sometimes diseases such as diabetes can cause skin manifestations that occur in the underarm area. Diabetes-related rashes are often more difficult to treat. Diabetes-related rashes or infections can be caused by an overproduction of yeast. Although diabetes and other diseases can be to blame for armpit rashes, most armpit rashes are rarely serious and most always respond favorably to treatment.
