How many types of scabies are there?

scabies is one parasitic skin disease caused by small mites that barely reach half a millimeter in length. In humans, this ectoparasitosis is usually due to the species Sarcoptes scabieihence it is also known as sarcoptic mange.

There are two other types of scabies. The notoedral mange and the demodectic mange. Notoedric mange is produced by species of the genus notoedres. It is very common in cats (feline scabies, notoedres cati). Demodectic mange is caused by the Demodex mite and is one of the most severe forms of mange, but it is more common in animals and relatively rare in humans. Another type of scabies, also very rare in humans, is walking dandruff, produced by mites of the genus Cheytiella.

Sarcoptic mange or scabies

Sarcoptic mange, scabies or human scabies is caused by Sarcoptes scabiei. This mite can also cause scabies in animals, but it is the type of scabies typical of humans. The severity of scabies is usually mild to moderate and there is an effective, cheap and easy to apply treatment.

The infestation occurs in the skin, under the layer or stratum corneum of the epidermis, where the mite digs galleries and tunnels to live and feed on the skin tissue. It produces a very intense itching that worsens with heat and generally also at night.

In immunosuppressed patients, for example in AIDS patients, sarcoptic mange can progress to hyperkeratotic scabiesalso called scabies in norwaywhich does not cause itching but does cause a strong keratinization of the skin that gives it an appearance similar to psoriasis.

Scabies medications, sometimes called scabicides, are usually applied topically in creams with permethrin, lindane, benzyl benzoate or crotamiton. Treatment includes washing personal and household clothing in hot water to eliminate possible eggs and mites that remain in the textile fibers and can cause a new infestation.

Notoedric mange or feline mange

Notoedric scabies is due to an infestation by mites of the genus notoedres. It is very common in cats produced by the species N. cati (feline mange). The feline scabies mite spreads quickly to other domestic animals, including humans, but it dies without causing the disease, since it can only reproduce in the cat.

Other species of notoedres They affect various wild animals that act as a reservoir for cat mange. The most used treatment is subcutaneous injections of selamectin, moxidectin or ivermectin and it is usually very effective. In puppies, creams with thiabendazole and other insecticides are used.

demodectic mange

Demodectic mange is the most serious type of mange in dogs and animals, although it does not usually affect humans. It is produced by mites of the genus Demodex They normally live on the skin and hair of the animal. They are also common as human skin flora; For example, it is normal to find Demodex folliculorum in the pores and hair follicles of the nose and face, especially the chin and eyebrows.

Demodectic mange usually affects deep layers of the skin and produces eschars, sores and secondary infections by bacteria and fungi. The usual treatment consists of baths with benzoyl peroxide, amitraz or combined shampoo; In persistent cases, subcutaneous injections of antiparasitics such as ivermectin or selamectin are used.
