It is designated with the term of abyss to that enormous and dangerous depth and that generally is related to a mountain or zone that presents / displays a significant height .

Large and extremely dangerous depth found in mountains, seas, or edges of cliffs
The abyss is located at the end of something or beyond the base of something and stands out for presenting a tremendous danger for those who approach it, because in case of tripping or getting dizzy and falling into it there is a certain risk of losing the life because of the great height they present.

"The recklessness of the group of climbers was decisive in the fall into the abyss suffered by one of them."
This type of pronounced depth is found on the peak of a mountain, in seas, oceans, or the void in which we can be exposed when being on the edge of a precipice.
The precipice is characterized by being a place in which the ground suddenly ends and the deep emptiness follows. If we cross the edge of a cliff we will fall to the bottom in a violent and abrupt way and as we said with an end that is usually deadly.

So the depth open at the edge of the precipice is called the abyss.

Great distances or differences in terms of ideas, time, spaces
As a consequence of referring to something big and gigantic, the word is used a lot to indicate great distances in terms of time or space.
Precisely, the term is widely used among people with a figurative sense to express the enormous differences that can be established between people regarding the ideas that each one holds .
People who do not belong to the same generation, due to their age difference, will present profound distances in their ways of thinking or approaching certain issues.

For a woman in her 80s, surely, living with someone without formally marrying will be unacceptable, but for a young man of about 25 years, such a situation is common and will be the one he will choose before deciding to marry his girlfriend.
We must say that these abysmal differences of thoughts and ideas are very difficult to reconcile and if an agreement is to be reached, some of the two parties will have to give in their position.
"A chasm really separates me from Maria as a result of her very closed ideas about politics ." "There is a gulf between the Colombian and Venezuelan governments."
Situation without return and serious
Likewise, when a situation is presented as insurmountable and incomprehensible, it is often referred to as an abyss.
In some moments, people suffer personal tragedies or go through critical moments in some aspect such as the economic one, because we are left without a job , and then, the feeling of those events causes us to have the same feeling of fear, of rupture, of no return and of restlessness as if we were really falling into an abyss.
"Juan is an abyss of doubts, he doesn't know what to do with his life after being fired."
Religion: hell
Also, in religion , the term abyss is a word that is often heard very often to designate a bottomless depth . The regular use is to refer to a well or even hell as the place of punishment par excellence that exists in religion. Meanwhile, when in this same context we speak of the exit from the abyss, it will imply a kind of resurrection.

On the other hand, the abyssal or abyssopelagic zone is one of the levels in which the ocean is divided according to its depth. It is found in the oceanic space between three thousand and six thousand meters deep.
The Challenger Deep turns out to be the deepest midpoint in the oceans , located in the Mariana Islands, south of the Trench. The maximum depth of this is 10,923 meters.
Place in the fantastic story of the Lord of the Rings
And in modern literature the abyss has also occupied a preferential place , since in the story of JRR Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings the Helm's Abyss is one of the most feared and outstanding places in history and that has been located at the foot of Thrihyrne peak. Although it is not the only one, since both as a place or as a title, the abyss has been a place always present in both literature and cinematography .
